Sanremo's cuisine is Ligurian, drawing on both sea and land: fragrant, simple and honest, built on fresh ingredients and Taggiasca olive oil. Between street food, historic trattorias and fish restaurants, you can eat very well here on any budget. Here are the local dishes to try and where to find them.

Sardenaira, the street-food queen

Sardenaira is Sanremo's signature flatbread: a soft base topped with tomato, anchovies, Taggiasca olives, garlic and capers. You'll find it in the bakeries and focaccerie in the centre, easy to eat as you walk. Also try classic Ligurian focaccia and farinata, a chickpea flatbread best eaten hot and crisp.

Traditional first courses

For a first course, try trofie or trenette al pesto, a symbol of Liguria, and homemade ravioli. Typical specialities of western Liguria include brandacujun (stockfish and potatoes) and cappon magro, a rich fish-and-vegetable dish traditionally served on special occasions.

Fresh fish and seaside aperitifs

For fish, head to the restaurants near the port and the market: mixed fried fish, raw seafood and pasta with the catch of the day. And at sunset, treat yourself to an aperitivo on the seafront, one of Sanremo's simple pleasures. For our favourite restaurants, take a look at our top five.
