Sanremo is the city of flowers, music and the sea, and a natural choice for a weekend on the Riviera dei Fiori. In two days you can enjoy its highlights at a relaxed pace: the beach, seafront walks, the Pigna old town, sweeping views and good Ligurian food. This guide gives you a practical day-by-day itinerary, with tips on what to see, when to go and where to stay.

Day one: sea, seafront and centre

Start the day on the seafront and the well-known cycling and walking path built on the old railway line, great for a stroll or a bike ride right by the sea. Then head into the centre: Corso Matteotti for shopping, the Art Nouveau Casino and the Portosole marina. Finish with a sunset aperitivo overlooking the sea, one of the simple pleasures of Sanremo.

Day two: the Pigna and the views

Spend the morning in the Pigna, the medieval old town of narrow lanes, stairways and arches, climbing up to the Regina Elena Gardens and the Sanctuary of Madonna della Costa. In the afternoon drive up to San Romolo or Monte Bignone: on clear days you can see as far as Corsica. A fitting way to end the weekend.

Where to eat and have an aperitivo

Ligurian cuisine is one of the reasons people come back: sardenaira, focaccia, pesto, fresh fish and traditional dishes such as cappon magro. Between the port and the centre you'll find historic trattorias, traditional osterias and wine bars that work for anything from an aperitivo to a late drink. Our dedicated articles cover our favourite restaurants and the local food.

When to go and where to stay

Thanks to its mild climate, Sanremo is pleasant all year round: spring and early autumn if you want to avoid the crowds, summer for the sea, February for the Festival. To enjoy the city in comfort, a central apartment near the sea is a good choice: you get space, a kitchen and freedom, far more than in a hotel room. Browse our apartments and book directly at the best price.
