Sanremo guide

The Pigna of Sanremo: what to see in the medieval old town

The Pigna is Sanremo's medieval core: a maze of narrow lanes, stairways and arches climbing the hill, named after its spiral shape like a pine cone. Walking through it feels like stepping back in time, away from the traffic and the seafront crowds. It's one of the things not to miss in Sanremo and can easily be visited on foot in a few hours.

What to see in the Pigna

Climb through the lanes up to the Regina Elena Gardens, with a fine view over the city and the sea. At the top stands the Sanctuary of Madonna della Costa, Sanremo's spiritual symbol, its dome overlooking the rooftops. Along the way you'll notice stone doorways, hidden little squares and photogenic views at every corner.

A bit of history

The Pigna grew in the Middle Ages as a fortified village, built upwards to defend against pirate raids. Its arches and covered passages served to reinforce the houses and create a defensive maze. Today that past can be felt in every alley, among artisan workshops and corners that tell of centuries of Ligurian history.

Practical tips for your visit

Wear comfortable shoes: the Pigna is all ups and downs between stairways and slopes. Go in the morning or late afternoon for the best light and to photograph arches and doorways at a relaxed pace. The visit is free and on foot; combine it with a stop at the Regina Elena Gardens for the finest view.
