Sanremo's cuisine is Ligurian, of sea and land: fragrant, simple and genuine, based on fresh ingredients and excellent Taggiasca olive oil. Between street food, historic trattorias and fish restaurants, you eat very well here at any budget. Here are the typical dishes to try and where to enjoy them.
Sardenaira, the street-food queen
Sardenaira is Sanremo's typical flatbread: soft base, tomato, anchovies, Taggiasca olives, garlic and capers. You'll find it in the bakeries and focaccerie of the centre, perfect to eat as you stroll. Also try the classic Ligurian focaccia and chickpea farinata, hot and crisp.
Traditional first courses
Among first courses, don't miss trofie or trenette al pesto, a symbol of Liguria, and homemade ravioli. Among the most typical specialities of western Liguria are brandacujun (stockfish and potatoes) and the famous cappon magro, a rich fish-and-vegetable dish for special occasions.
Fresh fish and seaside aperitifs
For fish, choose the restaurants near the port and the market: mixed fried fish, raw seafood and seafood pasta with the catch of the day. And at sunset, treat yourself to a seafront aperitivo, one of Sanremo's small great pleasures. For our favourite restaurants, take a look at our Top 5.
