Liguria: what to see and why choose it for your holiday

Liguria is the arc-shaped region facing the sea in north-western Italy, famous for its colourful villages, mild climate, olive groves and a cuisine loved worldwide. It is divided into the western Riviera (Riviera di Ponente, where Sanremo is) and the eastern Riviera (Riviera di Levante). If you're planning a seaside holiday in Italy, here's what to see and why Liguria is a perfect choice.

The western Riviera and Sanremo

The western Riviera, from the French border towards Genoa, is the Riviera dei Fiori: Sanremo, Bordighera, Imperia and the hinterland of medieval villages like Dolceacqua and Apricale. It's an area with a very mild climate, lovely beaches, a long seaside cycle path and an authentic atmosphere, less crowded than the most touristy spots. Sanremo is the ideal base to explore it.

Cinque Terre and Portofino

On the eastern side, the Riviera di Levante boasts some of Italy's most iconic destinations: the Cinque Terre, with their colourful clifftop villages, a UNESCO site, and Portofino, the elegant fishing village loved by the jet set. They're further from Sanremo (a few hours away), but remain a dream for anyone wanting to discover all of Liguria.

Genoa, capital of Liguria

Genoa is the capital: a fascinating, authentic seaside city, with one of Europe's largest old towns of narrow caruggi, the old port with one of Europe's biggest aquariums, and the sumptuous palaces of Via Garibaldi, a UNESCO site. A perfect stop to combine sea, history and culture during a holiday in Liguria.

What to eat in Liguria

Ligurian cuisine is simple and fragrant: pesto alla genovese with trofie or trenette, focaccia (and the famous cheese focaccia di Recco), chickpea farinata, Sanremo's sardenaira, fresh fish and Taggiasca olive oil. Each area has its own specialities: a trip to Liguria is also a journey through Mediterranean flavours.

When to go and where to stay

Thanks to its mild climate, Liguria can be visited all year round: summer for the sea, spring and autumn for the ideal weather and fewer crowds. To discover the western Riviera, Sanremo is the perfect base: central, well connected and full of services. Choose a well-kept apartment near the sea and book directly with us, at the best price.
